The Information Resources Management Department consists of four sub-units: Acquisitions, Bibliographic Access and Metadata, Electronic Resources, and Materials Management.
Acquisitions Unit
Coordinator: Scott Stangroom stangroom@library.umass.edu
The Acquisitions Unit is responsible for ordering and evaluating all materials for the UMass Amherst Libraries, including books, periodicals, microforms, DVD's, and CD's, digital and online resources (e.g., e-journals, e-books, and databases).
If you wish to donate materials to the Library, contact James R. Kelly, Humanities Bibliographer, at (413) 545-3981 or jrkelly@library.umass.edu.
If you wish to suggest an item for purchase, please use the Suggest New Material form.
Bibliographic Access and Metadata Unit
Coordinator: Meghan Banach Bergin mbanach@library.umass.edu
The Bibliographic Access and Metadata Unit catalogs library materials in all formats, corrects errors and records changes in the Library Catalog. Cataloging is the process of providing a description of an item, assigning a call number, assigning headings by which an item can be accessed in the Library Catalog, and providing cross-references to authorized forms of headings. This Unit also assists other Library departments with metadata creation and advises in the evaluation and selection of current and emerging metadata schema for digital collections within the Libraries.
To report on errors or inconsistencies in the Library Catalog, contact mbanach@library.umass.edu
Electronic Resources Unit
Coordinator: Linda Matson lmatson@library.umass.edu
The Electronic Resources Unit is responsible for licensing and providing access to internet-based resources such as electronic journals, databases, and electronic books. This Unit also provides technical support and troubleshooting for electronic resources.

Materials Management Unit

Physical processing involves applying call numbers and barcode labels, ownership stamps, book pockets or plates, and security devices to items added to the Library's collections. The Materials Management Unit also coordinates transfers of materials in and out of the Library for various purposes such as transfers to offsite storage and special projects like digitization.
