Graduate Student Wins Research Award 
 

Amy Brady, a graduate student in the English Department at UMass Amherst, has been selected as the 2012 awardee for Research in the Center for Research Libraries’ Primary Source Awards. The UMass Amherst Libraries is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). CRL recognized the awardees in Chicago in April.      Press Release

Three Falcon Chicks Successfully Hatched 
 

The installation of a video camera atop Du Bois Library is providing new information about the mating pair of peregrine falcons that have taken up residence each spring on the 274-foot perch for the last decade. Thousands of watchers have followed along in real time since mid-April as three of four eggs hatched successfully and the falcon parents began feeding the chicks.  Fans of the FalconCam are logging onto the site from their smart phones and iPads and keeping an eye from home and work on their computers.   Press Release

James L. Peregrine Falcons Nesting Atop Du Bois Library Get Live Reality Show 
 

A pair of Peregrine Falcons, which have successfully nested on the roof of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library at UMass Amherst for the past ten years, now have a live webcam thanks to the UMass Amherst Facilities Planning Division, the Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), the Libraries' Systems and Web Management Department, and the Friends of the Libraries. The Hampshire Council of Governments and UMass Amherst Libraries Honor County's 350th
 
 

The Hampshire Council of Governments and UMass Amherst Libraries recently selected 44 historic documents to reproduce and offer for sale as a cooperative fundraising effort and to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of Hampshire County. The reproductions were selected from the collection of dockets, session books, maps, and other paper records dealing with Hampshire County business from as early as 1677 that the Council transferred to UMass Amherst Libraries last year.  Many are available for view online, and all are available for use on site by appointment.  Press release

Libraries Help Campus Celebrate Earth Day 
 

The Du Bois Library will offer a number of sustainability-related activities for this year’s expanded Earth Day Festival from Wednesday, April 18, to Monday, April 23, 2012. The activities at the Library include a film screening of “Rivers and Tides,” a self-guided garden tour, a demonstration of "BuildingGreen Suite,” a resource dedicated to green building materials and practices, and a celebration of the gold rating for our campus from STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System). Yankee Publishing Donates Archives to Special Collections 
 

Yankee Publishing Incorporated of Dublin, New Hampshire, has donated its corporate records to UMass Amherst Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives. The materials offer insight into the early years and growth of the corporation and its remarkable survival in an age of media conglomeration, as well as its flagship publications Yankee Magazine and the Old Farmer's Almanac. The Yankee Publishing Incorporated collection adds rich context to Special Collections’ extensive historic New England holdings, providing students, scholars, and researchers a wide window into New England social life and customs.  Press release

Tenth Annual "Dinner with Friends" Fundraiser 
 

On Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 6:30 p.m., the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries will host the tenth annual “Dinner with Friends” at the Du Bois Library. Yankee Publishing’s Editor-in-Chief Judson Hale will spin stories about New England’s past and present. During a gourmet feast featuring New England fare, food historians and University of Massachusetts Press authors Keith Stavely and Kathleen Fitzgerald will cook up some tasty tales from the region’s entertaining culinary history. Libraries Announce Fellowships in Digital Humanities 
 

Special Collections and University Archives in the Libraries is accepting applications for fellowships in digital humanities. Experiential Training in Historical Information Resources (ETHIR) is an initiative designed to provide students with structured, hands-on experience using and interpreting historical documentary resources. The UMass Amherst Libraries will offer short-term residential fellowships to assist younger scholars in conducting research in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) in the Du Bois Library. Full-time graduate students, faculty, or independent scholars (with a PhD) are eligible to apply. Fellows will receive a stipend of $2,500 for a four-week residency. Sunday, February 26, 2012, 3:00 p.m.

St. John’s Congregational Church (Springfield, Mass.), in collaboration with The W.E.B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst Libraries, host the 2nd Annual “The Soul of W.E.B. Du Bois: A Tribute to the Black Church.” The high-energy program will feature inspirational songs, poetic expressions, and other tributes to the Western Massachusetts native.

The Libraries will host “Get Your Game On” on Thursday, March 1, from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am, in the Learning Commons on the Lower Level of Du Bois Library. The Libraries will host the 18th Annual Du Bois Lecture on February 23, 2012, at 4:30 p.m., in the Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union. Derrick P. Alridge will give a talk, “Ideas Have Consequences: The Radical Pedagogy of W.E.B. Du Bois.” He will explore Du Bois’s many meanings of pedagogy and offer a genealogy of Du Bois’s ideas about a variety of issues faced by black Americans during the 20th century. Taking a Bite Out of Textbook Costs: Open Education Initiative grants save students more than $70,000 
 

The high cost of commercial textbooks, both print and electronic, is a major concern for today’s students and their parents. In an effort to reduce these costs, the UMass Amherst Provost’s Office and the University Libraries launched a program in the spring of 2011—the Open Education Initiative—that supports faculty interested in pursuing non-traditional educational resources as an alternative to the traditional commercial textbook.  Press Release

Open Access Week, a global event in its fifth year, will be held from October 24 to October 28 this year. The Libraries are pleased to announce the opening of the new Microform Viewing Room in the Learning Commons on the Lower Level of the Du Bois Library. The room has microfilm and microfiche readers, scanners, and printers. The keynote speaker, Michael Haley ’65, will give a talk “Ready When You Are C.B.! War Stories from Behind the Lens.”  Emmy Award-winning producer, director, and actor, Michael Haley has had a 40-year career in the film industry, starting in the late ’60s after he graduated from UMass Amherst.     Press release

UMass Amherst Libraries will launch the Masha Kabakow Rudman Issues in Children’s Literature Collection on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Du Bois Library. Jay Schafer, Director of the UMass Amherst Libraries, was elected by his peers to the Board of Trustees of LYRASIS, the nation’s largest regional non-profit membership organization serving libraries.   Schafer has been a member of the UMass Amherst community for the past ten years and has been Director of Libraries since 2004.  Press release

Exhibit: Second Wave in the Valley: Reflections of the Valley Women's History Collaborative Collections 
 

The Libraries host an exhibit “Second Wave in the Valley: Reflections of the Valley Women’s History Collaborative Collections,” through August 30, 2011, on the Lower Level, Du Bois Library. The theme of the exhibit is based on the Valley Women’s History Collaborative, formed in 1998 by UMass Amherst history professor Joyce Berkman, Hampshire College professor Susan Tracy, and community activist Kaymarion Raymond, to document and preserve progressive women’s activism in the Pioneer Valley. Hampshire Council of Governments Donates Rare and Valuable Records to Libraries
 
 

The Libraries announce a major gift of materials to Special Collections and University Archives. The donation consists of paper records dealing with Hampshire County business from as early as 1677. The records include court dockets; road, railroad and dam construction documents; censuses; and maps.  Press Release

Exhibit: “Human Solidarity, Polish Solidarność” 
 

The Libraries host an exhibit “Human Solidarity, Polish Solidarność,” from April 6 through May 20, 2011, on the Lower Level of Du Bois Library, UMass Amherst. The exhibit consists of twenty plates portraying the history of Solidarność through maps, photos, press clippings, and a narrative that also makes connections with the history of the American labor movement. Libraries to Survey Campus Community 
 

The Libraries will conduct a survey, LibQUAL+™, of faculty members and graduate students, and a random sample of 2,800 undergraduates starting March 30. Participants will be emailed and asked to participate in the brief web-based survey. Helicopter Makes Delivery to Top of Du Bois Library

Librarian Wins Career Achievement Award 
 

Gordon Fretwell, retired Associate Director of UMass Amherst Libraries, has received the 2010 Library Assessment Career Achievement Award from the Association of Research Libraries.  Fretwell was instrumental in creating the definitions for standardized use of statistical data for research libraries.  He helped make it possible for research libraries to contribute and use high quality comparable data for effective library management.  Press Release

Libraries to Replace Elevators in Du Bois 
 

The Libraries have initiated a project to replace all five elevators in the Du Bois Library.  One elevator at a time will be taken out of service and each elevator replacement will take approximately 12 to 16 weeks.  The project is expected to be completed in 2012.  More information

 Community Brings Du Bois Mural to Life 
  W.E.B. DuBois

Students, artists, and community members are helping to repaint a mural depicting the life of W.E.B. Du Bois, the Library's namesake, in Great Barrington.  Du Bois was born there and went on to become one of the leading black thinkers of the 20th century.  

When artist Brett Parson and Jake Reiny arrived at the Taconic parking lot on Sunday at 10 a.m. to being repainting the W.E.B. Du Bois mural, there were already about a dozen people waiting for them, raring to go. More than 40 community members showed up on Sunday to help Parson and Reiny redo the mural.

Officials from the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife conducted the annual banding of peregrine falcon chicks in the nesting box atop the W.E.B. Du Bois Library on May 28. Richard P. Nathhorst, facilities and campus planning, says more than 20 chicks have been fitted with the identification bands in recent years. Birds from this site have been seen up and down the East Coast and in Colombia, according to state officials.

The UMass Amherst Libraries announces the opening of the Teaching Commons on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 and will host an Open House for faculty on that day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Teaching Commons on Floor 26, in the Du Bois Library. The program includes welcoming remarks at 2:30 p.m., followed by discussion and tours of the facility. Refreshments will be served.

New England Chowder Compendium 
  New England Chowder Compendium

UMass Amherst Senior Jake Walker has created the New England Chowder Compendium, an online collection of chowder recipes, pictures, and ads from the 1870s to the 1970s.  Working in Special Collections, he created the site from the Beatrice A. Du Bois Center Hosts Inaugural Symposium 
 

The W.E.B. Du Bois Center hosts its inaugural symposium on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 5:30 p.m., Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union, UMass Amherst.  Lonnie G. Bunch, III, Ph.D., will speak on "The Challenge of Building a National Museum."  Dr. Bunch is the director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.  The event is free and open to the public.
