UMASS AMHERST LIBRARIES HOSTS
“EXPLORING OPEN ACCESS JOURNALS:
CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH OF LANDSCAPES OF VIOLENCE”
Amherst, MA - The UMass Amherst Libraries will host “Exploring Open Access Journals: Celebrating the Launch of Landscapes of Violence” on Oct 21, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Teaching Commons, Floor 26, Du Bois Library, UMass Amherst. The event will provide an overview of the field of open access journals and ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst, and celebrate the launch of the new interdisciplinary open access journal Landscapes of Violence. The event is part of Open Access Week, October 18-24, 2010. Refreshments will be served.
Landscapes of Violence is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal focused on studies of violence, warfare, conflict, trauma, and human rights. One of the primary goals of this new journal is to create an inclusive platform to reach a broad audience including scientists, academics, policymakers, and the public. To that end, Landscapes of Violence is an open-source journal, allowing articles to be available to all on the internet, free of charge and without restriction. The journal will feature scholarly articles, policy and program analysis, letters to the editor, and book reviews. In addition, the online format will allow supplementary audio and/or visual material to accompany written pieces. The first issue will be published on October 15, 2010, and can be accessed at http://scholarworks.umass.edu/lov/.
ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst (http://scholarworks.umass.edu), an open access digital repository service, was established in 2006 to provide a digital showcase of the research and scholarly output of members of the University of Massachusetts Amherst community. The repository serves as a permanent digital archive for these scholarly materials. ScholarWorks provides enhanced professional visibility for faculty and researchers; a framework for effective description of materials; excellent search and retrieval facilities; broader dissemination and increased use of materials through services such as Google Scholar and other search engines; an online journal publishing system with an open access option; virtually unlimited space for project documents and data, and much more.
The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Anthropology and the UMass Amherst Libraries.
