LIBRARY OFFERS WORKSHOPS IN JANUARY
FOR FACULTY AND INSTRUCTORS
Amherst, MA - The UMass Amherst Libraries will offer two workshops in January for faculty and instructors, "A Practical Approach to Information Literacy," on Wednesday, January 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and "Expanding Information Literacy with RefWorks and RefShare," on Friday, January 15, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. To register: https://etna.oit.umass.edu/public/workshops. For more information, email instruction@library.umass.edu.
"A Practical Approach to Information Literacy" will present an array of credible online resources available through the library. Attendees will learn how to link these resources to SPARK, blogs, and other online tools so that students will find them as easy to use as the Google search box. The workshop will illustrate how to create customized widgets to draw students to these resources.
"Expanding Information Literacy with RefWorks and RefShare" will illustrate how to create sharable reading lists that link back to the library's subscriptions and print holdings. It will also demonstrate how to import RefShare reading lists into SPARK courses, course blogs, web pages, and emails. Students and colleagues can export the reading lists into their own RefWorks accounts.
RefWorks is a web-based citation management software program used to organize and generate bibliographies, manage citations, and retrieve references. RefShare is a feature in RefWorks that allows users to share their folders, further enhancing collaborative research. The folders may be shared with both members of the UMass Amherst community and globally with any researcher having Internet access.
