 Community Brings Du Bois Mural to Life
W.E.B. DuBois

Students, artists, and community members are helping to repaint a mural depicting the life of W.E.B. Du Bois, the Library's namesake, in Great Barrington.  Du Bois was born there and went on to become one of the leading black thinkers of the 20th century.   Full Story

New Circ/Reserves Desk

The new Circulation/Reserves Desk on the Lower Level of the Du Bois Library provides service all hours the building is open. This single desk combines the services of the Circulation Desk (checkout, return, billing, and pickup for Five College and Interlibrary Loan books) with those of the Reserves Desk (circulation and return of print reserve materials, laptop computers, and digital cameras).           More information

 Exhibit: "10 Years of Massachusetts Book Awards"

The UMass Amherst Libraries present an exhibit, "10 Years of Massachusetts Book Awards," on the Lower Level of the Du Bois Library, through September 30, 2010. A reception will be held on September 16, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The exhibit features the prizewinners in several categories across the decade of the Award's existence to date.  More information

Falcons on roof of Du Bois Library

Officials from the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife conducted the annual banding of peregrine falcon chicks in the nesting box atop the W.E.B. Du Bois Library on May 28. Richard P. Nathhorst, facilities and campus planning, says more than 20 chicks have been fitted with the identification bands in recent years. Birds from this site have been seen up and down the East Coast and in Colombia, according to state officials.

Libraries Announce Teaching Commons Opening

The UMass Amherst Libraries announces the opening of the Teaching Commons on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 and will host an Open House for faculty on that day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Teaching Commons on Floor 26, in the Du Bois Library. The program includes welcoming remarks at 2:30 p.m., followed by discussion and tours of the facility. Refreshments will be served.

 NEH Awards Grant to Libraries to Complete Du Bois Digitization

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries have been awarded a grant of $314,787 from the National Endowment for the Humanities' We the People program to complete digitization of the papers of African-American intellectual and activist W.E.B. Du Bois.

New England Chowder Compendium
New England Chowder Compendium

UMass Amherst Senior Jake Walker has created the New England Chowder Compendium, an online collection of chowder recipes, pictures, and ads from the 1870s to the 1970s.  Working in Special Collections, he created the site from the Beatrice A. McIntosh Cookery Collection in the library.  In using the compendium one can find how chowder has been transformed from its layered preparation centuries ago to its current conception.  New England Chowder Compendium   Read review in Eat Me Daily

"Dinner with Friends" April 10
 

 On Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 6:30 p.m., the Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries will host the eighth annual "Dinner with Friends" in the Learning Commons at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library on the UMass Amherst campus. The event features talks by three notable speakers: authors Bernard A. Drew and Jacqueline Sheehan, and illustrator and 2009 Caldecott medalist Beth Krommes MAT '80, as well as a champagne and hors d'oeuvre reception with the UMass Jazz Quartet, and a gourmet dinner. Du Bois Center Hosts Inaugural Symposium

The W.E.B. Du Bois Center hosts its inaugural symposium on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 5:30 p.m., Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union, UMass Amherst.  Lonnie G. Bunch, III, Ph.D., will speak on "The Challenge of Building a National Museum."  Dr. Bunch is the director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.  The event is free and open to the public.

Libraries Announce Spring Break Improvements
 

The UMass Amherst Libraries will make improvements to the W.E.B. Du Bois Library during the week of March 13 to March 19, spring break.  The Du Bois Library will be closed Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14 to install a new fire protection system and for water service work.  The library will re-open on Monday, March 15, at 8:00 a.m.   press release

The UMass Amherst Libraries present an exhibit, "Digitizing Du Bois: One Year Later," through May 21, 2010, in Special Collections and University Archives, Floor 25, Du Bois library.  The exhibit features noteworthy items discovered during the process of digitizing the Du Bois Papers. The items include photos, letters, posters, and other papers relating to W.E.B. Du Bois's life and the history of the 20th century.   press release

Staros said that the Learning Commons, with its high-tech work stations and group learning environments, has “transformed the library, the campus and student life.”

 UMass Celebrates Expansion of Learning Space

Continuing coverage of the Learning Commons expansion by The Boston Globe. The expansion includes a 20 percent increase in overall space to 30,000 square feet, a 60 percent boost in seating to 450 and eight new group study rooms.

UMass Celebrates 20 Percent Expansion of Library Learning Commons

"As part of an ongoing, five-year, $8.5-million renovation project, the University of Massachusetts celebrated a 20 percent expansion of the Learning Commons in the campus' main library yesterday.  The 6,000 square-foot addition, which opened at the beginning of the semester, boosts available seating by 60 percent - from 250 to 450 - in the W.E.B. Exhibit: "Writing the Landscape: Books from the Library of American Landscape History"

 The UMass Amherst Libraries is hosting an exhibit "Writing the Landscape: Books from the Library of American Landscape History." The exhibit features several books developed by the Library of American Landscape History (LALH) and photographs by noted landscape photographer Carol Betsch. The exhibition is on view from February 1 - May 20, 2010.
